Niels Hansen Jacobsen (1861-1941) was a Danish sculptor and ceramicist, known for his expressive and often symbolist works. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and had a significant part of his career in Paris, where he was influenced by Symbolism and the Art Nouveau movement.
His ceramic works are particularly known for their dramatic and almost adventurous expression, often inspired by myths, legends and human existential themes. One of his most iconic works is "The Shadow", a sculpture that reflects the presence of death and was also made of ceramics.
Hansen Jacobsen worked both with sculpture and ceramics, and his works are characterized by organic forms, grotesque figures and a vivid imaginativeness. He also established himself as a potter with unique stoneware works, which demonstrated his ability to balance between art and functional craftsmanship.
He later returned to Denmark, where he continued to work and exhibit. Today, his works are represented in several museums, including the Vejen Art Museum, which has a large collection of his sculptures and ceramic works.
