Jørgen Haugen Sørensen (1934-2021) was one of Denmark's most important sculptors in the 20th century. Jørgen Haugen Sørensen stayed and worked abroad since his youth. In the 1960s in Paris, since Verona and from 1971 mostly in Pietrasanta in Tuscany, Italy. From 1982, he received a lifetime artist benefit from the Danish state.

Jørgen Haugen Sørensen was a member of the artist associations Decembristerne og Grønningen and Veksølund, Exhibition Center for Sculpture from 1978-2010.

Jørgen Haugen Sørensen began an apprenticeship as a plaster and potter in Copenhagen at the age of 15. Already here he showed a unique ability to shape, but he continued his studies on his own. At the age of 19, in 1953 he exhibited three sculptures at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. After this, he began a long and extremely productive career as a visual artist.

Jørgen Haugen Sørensen is particularly known for his expressive animal and human representations, such as his early butcher scenes.

During the 1960s, Jørgen Haugen Sørensen worked in Paris and Italy, where he was inspired by the political and rebellious situation that characterized the period. Here he worked with films, among other things.

After visiting several bronze workshops and marble quarries in Italy, Haugen Sørensen began working with stone in a geometric design language. However, the expressive expression becomes persistent in Haugen Sørensen's art, at the same time as he develops several monumental sculptures.

Jørgen Haugen Sørensen has done several decoration tasks all over the world, including the House that Rains on Sankt Hans Torv in Nørrebro in Copenhagen.

Most recently, Jørgen Haugen Sørensen decorated Copenhagen's Courthouse with the work Justitio and the Witnesses. The work consists of five dramatic reliefs, which contrast with the harmonious architecture of the courthouse.
